U.S. gymnast Jordan Chiles loses bronze medal in floor exercise
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Sunday that American gymnast Jordan Chiles will be stripped of her bronze medal in the floor exercise at the Paris Games, with the medal being awarded to Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu.
This decision follows a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Saturday, which determined that the USA’s inquiry into Chiles’ score in the floor exercise final was filed after the one-minute deadline.
The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) confirmed that Chiles’ original score of 13.666 would be reinstated, placing Bărbosu, who scored 13.700, in third place.
The IOC has since confirmed that Bărbosu will receive the bronze medal originally awarded to Chiles.
“Following the CAS decision regarding the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Floor Exercise Final and the amended ranking by the International Gymnastics Federation, the IOC will reallocate the bronze medal to Ana Barbosu (Romania),” the IOC said in a statement.
The IOC is coordinating with the Romanian National Olympic Committee on the reallocation ceremony and with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USO PC) regarding the return of Chiles’ bronze medal.
CNN has reached out to the USOPC and USA Gymnastics for comment on whether they will appeal the CAS decision. USA Gymnastics, in a statement issued Saturday, expressed its disappointment with the ruling.
The floor exercise final on Monday ended dramatically. After Chiles’ routine, Bărbosu initially believed she had secured the bronze with a score of 13.700. Chiles had posted a score of 13.666, but a successful challenge by her coaches increased her score by 0.1, moving her into third place behind gold medalist Rebeca Andrade and fellow American Simone Biles.
The podium, featuring the first all-Black gymnastics medalists at the Olympics, became one of the most memorable images of the Games as Andrade was honored by the Americans.
However, CAS ruled that the inquiry into Chiles’ score was submitted after the one-minute deadline, casting doubt on her medal.
Following the CAS decision, Chiles posted on her Instagram story with four broken heart emojis and announced that she would be taking a break from social media for her mental health.
