The Historical Context The journey to Bangladesh’s independence was marked by a nine-month battle known as the Bangladesh Liberation War. On December 16, 1971, after months of bloodshed and suffering, the Pakistan Armed Forces surrendered to the combined forces of Bangladesh’s freedom fighters (Mukti Bahini) and their Indian allies, leading to the birth of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation.
