বাগেরহাটে বিশ্ব ঐতিহ্যের অংশ খান জাহানের বসত বাড়ি খননে বেরিয়ে আসছে ৬শত বছর আগের সুলতানী আমলের বিভিন্ন প্রত্নতত্ব নিদর্শন। ঐতিহাসিক ষাটগম্বুজ মসজিদের অদূরে সুন্দরঘোনা গ্রামে খান জাহান আলীর বসতভিটা। ৩১ ডিসেম্বর থেকে শুরু হওয়া খনন কাজ চলবে ৩১ জানুয়ারি পর্যন্ত। ২০০১ সাল থেকে ১০ একর জমির নিয়ে খান জাহানের বসত ভিটায় প্রতি বছর একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে চলে খননকাজ। ২০ বছর ধরে খননের ফলে নতুন নতুন তথ্য উপাত্ত খুঁজে পাচ্ছে সংশ্লিষ্ট বিভাগ। হযরত খানজাহানের বসতবাটি ছাড়াও চুনাখোলা ১ গম্বুজ মসজিদ, সিংড়ার ১ গম্বুজ মসজিদ, রনবিজয়পুর ১ গম্বুজ মসজিদ, জিন্দাপীর মাজার ও মসজিদ, ৯ গম্বুজ ও রেজা খাঁ ৬ গম্বুজ মসজিদ ৬শ বছর আগের ইটের পাকা সড়কসহ অনেক মূল্যবান পুরাকীর্তিসহ বিভিন্ন নিদর্শন দেখার জন্য প্রতিদিন ভিড় জমাচ্ছেন পর্যটকরা।

সুলতানি আমলে খানজাহানের বসতবাটির ভূমির স্তরবিন্যাস, স্থাপত্যশৈলি ও কালানুক্রমিক বিবর্তন বের করাই এই খননের উদ্দেশ্য। দেশ ও বিদেশের নতুন প্রজন্মের কাছে দেশের অতীত ঐতিহ্য তুলে ধরার প্রয়াস ব্যক্ত করে প্রত্নতত্ব অধিদফতর।
সকাল সাড়ে ৬টা থেকেই দুপুর আড়াইটা পর্যন্ত চলে খনন কাজ। প্রত্নতত্ব অধিদফতরের ৭ কর্মকর্তা-কর্মচারী ও স্থানীয় ১৪ জন শ্রমিক যত্নসহকারে এসব নিদর্শন সংরক্ষণে কাজ করছে। খুলনা প্রত্নতত্ব অধিদফতরের আঞ্চলিক পরিচালক খান মিতা জানান, দ্রুত খননকাজ শেষ করে অতীত ঐতিহ্য তুলে আনার প্রয়াস রয়েছে তাদের।
